Advocacy: Conference speaker announcement

 

Join us at Ngā Wāhi Auaha Creative Spaces Conference 2024 for a deep dive into the world of advocacy and collective action. This year, our focus is on unpacking the elements of successful advocacy campaigns and discovering how they drive meaningful change. Our speakers and panelists will share their personal experiences and insights, providing a comprehensive look at what makes campaigns effective.

Whether you're an experienced advocate or new to the field, this conference offers a unique opportunity to enhance your skills, learn from seasoned professionals, and connect with others passionate about creating positive change through advocacy.

What makes a great advocacy campaign?

Our panel share their campaigns and unpack how they influence change through advocacy. What makes their campaigns a success and how can we adopt these strategies in to our advocacy work? 

Facilitator
Jessica Palalagi
Born in Aotearoa/New Zealand, Jessica traces her ancestry to Niue/Nukututaha in Te Moananui a Kiwa and Aberdeen, Scotland. She has an MA in Art History from Auckland University where she focused on contemporary Maori and Pasifika art.  Currently she is the Kaiwhakahaere/GM for the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi and is also one of the founders of In*ter*is*land Collective; a misfit collection of tagata Moana aunties, activists and artists based in London, UK and Aotearoa.

Panelists

Bridget Williams founded Bead and Proceed in 2018, a social enterprise using creativity to promote the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She is a recognised SDGs expert in Aotearoa and beyond, an elected community board member, and active in global networks like the World Economic Forum Global Shapers, Global Women, and the Asia New Zealand Leadership Network. Her work has been acknowledged by leaders such as Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, and she was a 2023 Local Hero Medallist by the New Zealander of the Year Awards. 



Kassie Hartendorp
(Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) is a community organiser who has been involved with social justice movements for Te Tiriti justice, LGBTIQ+ rights, anti-racism and workers rights. She is currently the Director of community campaigning organisation ActionStation.


 

Judy Darragh
lives and works in Auckland and played a significant role in developing ARTSPACE, Teststrip, and Cuckoo. She completed a Diploma in Visual Communication and Design at Wellington Polytechnic and has taught at the tertiary level for many years. Her work is held in major collections, including Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland Art Gallery, and Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. In 2004, Te Papa featured a major retrospective of her work titled 'Judy Darragh: So... you made it?', curated by Natasha Conland. 

 

 

Workshop – Tracey Monastra
Shifting the rock together: tools for collective advocacy

Tracey Monastra is an arts advocate, cultural programme manager, and audience engagement specialist with over 20 years of experience in the Aotearoa New Zealand arts sector. She excels in developing partnerships and building programmes that meet the needs of organisations and communities. Tracey is passionate about connecting contemporary art and culture with audiences. With a background in theatre, she has worked as a set designer for companies like The Conch, Taki Rua, a Slightly Isolated Dog, and Jealous.

Tracey Monastra from Creative New Zealand, walks us through building an advocacy campaign and getting the most engagement from your stories and messaging.
