Te Tiriti o Waitangi

'Te Tiriti o Waitangi needs to be considered across all your work, both at governance and operational levels. This is not simply a case of writing one policy once. Rather, it’s a continual process – or a journey. It is embracing tikanga Māori within your organisation. Community Toolkit

Leadership

What does leadership mean for your organisation, your staff, board members and all the people who participate in it? Below are organisations with different approaches that may help you on that journey.

Inspiring Communities

Leadership can be dynamic and fluid, It’s easy to assume leaders are heroes who "know it all and do it all’" But there are very different kinds of leadership, where everyone’s knowledge, ideas and actions can play a part in shaping decisions about vision, values, actions and the culture of 'how things are done around here".  Leadership as Learning is a resource to support you to navigate through some of the tensions, learning and adaptation needed to work effectively. The Inspiring Communities website has information about webinars and courses, and provides downloadable resources.

LEAD

"To change the world is courageous but often messy work. It’s beautiful and challenging. It requires much more than good intentions. Most of all, truly impactful change needs effective leadership." LEAD, Centre for Not For Profit Governance & Leadership, offers mentoring, workshops and training for people working in not-for-profit organisations.

Wayfinding Leadership

Leadership from a Māori perspective is about "stepping into your Rangatira space". Based on the art of traditional Polynesian navigation, wayfinding leadership shows how wayfinding can transform leaders and organisations. Visit Wayfinding Leadership website and watch the TEDx talk, Wayfinding Leadership: Wisdom for Developing Potential with Dr Chellie Spiller, (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa).

Governance

Insights into good governance

Arts Access Aotearoa has a board of trustees, chaired by Lynley Hutton. Lynley has more than 25 years of leadership experience working across the government, private and education sectors. Now self-employed, she contributes to the community by volunteering on a number of organisations’ committees and boards.

Being a trustee for Arts Access Aotearoa is a volunteer role. As its Chair, Lynley says her role goes way beyond delivering a summary of Arts Access Aotearoa’s activities at its annual general meeting. In this article, she reflects on what makes the role important and rewarding for her, and offers insights into what good governance looks like.

Community Governance

The Community Governance organisation supports "great governance" of community organisations across Aotearoa. It has a bunch of resources on governance, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi at the board table: "Seek advice early and don’t be afraid to ask mana whenua. Who are the iwi leaders that you could seek guidance or advice from? Do you already have relationships with them?" And this guide, He matapono kawanatanga | Governance Principles from Te Ao Māori, provides more background to the Good Governance Code.
